World Sepsis Day was inaugurated exactly ten years ago and, since then, has made great progress in the fight against sepsis. Sepsis awareness has increased across the globe. However, sepsis still accounts for approximately 11 million lives lost every year around the world. This does not include millions of deaths by viral sepsis due to COVID-19.

Sepsis causes enormous losses in high-income countries but disproportionately affects vulnerable populations such as young children in resource-poor countries. Many nations still need to implement concrete measures in their healthcare systems to make sepsis a priority.

At the recent G7 Health Ministers' and Leaders' Communiqués, governments were urged to "boost the implementation of the WHA Resolution". The Communiqué emphasised the need to "intensify the efforts to strengthen early detection, diagnosis, and therapy of sepsis, and ensure synergy with antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control programmes".

World Sepsis Day will celebrate the progress of sepsis advocacy and clinical systems advancements over the last ten years this year. It will pave the way to make sepsis a global and national health priority.

World Sepsis Day will be marked with an event to spread this message globally and accelerate the fight against sepsis. There will be a scientific symposium and a best practices panel, followed by a celebration of the achievements of the past ten years. The Global Sepsis Awards will also be presented, followed by a fundraising dinner.

Abionic will also be celebrating ten years of World Sepsis day and participate in this event organised by the Globale Sepsis Alliance and Sepsis Stiftung. The event will take place on the 16th of September at  Veranstaltungszentrum der Berliner Sparkasse Kronprinzessinnenweg, Berlin and will also be accessible online.

It will be attended by healthcare policymakers and representatives of health authorities, patient organisations and health providers, and representatives from science, industry and civil society from the four corners of the world. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and German Federal Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach will also be attending, along with members from the G7. A total of 180 participants are expected to attend the event.

The programme will include:

11:00 - 17:15 Part I: Symposium – Health Policy and Quality Improvement
18:00 - 19:30 Part II: Learning from Successful National Sepsis Initiatives
20:00 - 22:30 Part III: Celebration and Fundraising Dinner

Abionic will be present at the event as a Gold Sponsor. The company's participation will include:

Exhibit space at the venue: Abionic will be present to introduce its nanofluidic solution enabling the rapid quantification of Pancreatic Stone Protein as an early biomarker of sepsis.

Roundtable scientific networking session with key opinion leaders and members of the GSA and Sepsis Foundation board and executive team. Presentation of the PSP as presymptomatic diagnosis of nosocomial sepsis and a true enabler in the fight against antibiotic resistance.

COVID-19 testing: To ensure the safety of all, a COVID-19 test will be performed on all participants and speakers at the event entrance (mandatory). About 200 people will be tested with the 2-Minute COVID-19 Saliva test by Abionic (Gold Sponsor).
