More than 40 million health professionals worldwide joined WHO’s call to action on the first-ever Health Day at COP.

Health works urgently plead for more immediate and decisive measures to phase out fossil fuels, transition to clean energy, enhance resilience, and provide support to the most vulnerable individuals and communities facing the harshest impacts of climate change.

The climate crisis presents a myriad of health threats, increasing the risk of life-threatening diseases such as cholera, malaria and dengue, along with escalating air pollution and more. It is imperative that leaders take prompt action to forge a healthier, more resilient world for future generations.

A critical global priority, both at the local and international levels, involves directing funds towards establishing climate-resilient, low-carbon health systems. This imperative step aims to protect populations from the negative health impacts stemming from climate change.

By increasing funding, the sector opens up greater possibilities to innovate, adapt and deliver optimal care. This increased financial support is critical for establishing a robust and more resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding current challenges and anticipating future uncertainties. Additionally, it paves the way for enhanced preparedness and responsiveness in the face of evolving climate-related threats.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said, “In the face of the urgent challenges posed by health and climate change, health professionals stand united in every effort to improve health outcomes and address the climate crises”.
