The Royal Marsden Foundation Trust has installed a MAGNETOM® Aera 1.5 Tesla MRI system from Siemens Healthcare in its Sutton site. It is being used for a wide range of clinical imaging including brain, spine, abdominal, pelvic and breast procedures, with plans for the hospital to expand its use to MRI-guided intervention in the future. Located in the Department of Radiology, the system will operate alongside an existing Siemens system, theMAGNETOM Avanto 1.5 Tesla.

The Aera’s advanced post-processing abilities automate many processes, assisted by the Tim 4G (Total imaging matrix) and Dot™ (Day optimising throughput) technology, helping to increase efficiencies and enhance workflow. The system’s 48 channels and lightweight coils are said by the company to give radiographers the flexibility to personalise examinations for patients based on their condition and clinical indication.

The Aera’s wide, short 70cm Open Bore is helping to accommodate a variety of patients who can be scanned feet or head first, significantly improving acceptability for claustrophobic and bariatric patients. The system is also equipped with a Tim Dockable table, enabling fast and flexible patient preparation outside the scanner room and improved patient access for injections.

“The Royal Marsden is a renowned oncology centre and the Aera’s wide bore, MoodLight feature and detachable table continue to ensure patients receive the most comfortable and efficient examination possible,” said Malcolm Pickering, Regional Sales Manager at Siemens Healthcare. “This is the second Siemens system in the Department of Radiology, meaning the radiographers can continue to benefit from the system’s ease-of-use for faster scans without compromising on image quality.”
