HCWH Europe celebrates two decades of sustainable healthcare with its new anniversary report. Sustainable healthcare: the past, the present, and the future looks back at progress across the sector in Europe since HCWH Europe’s founding in 2003, and ahead, to the next 20 years to come.

From the ban of mercury thermometers in Europe to over 50 health systems committing to net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, the health sector is leading by example and driving positive change for people and planet. We are honoured to be at the forefront of this change and want to thank our members, sponsors, partners, funders, and donors who make our work possible.

What HCWH does best is to demonstrate, drive, trigger, inspire solutions that are real and can be scaled up and taken to a different level. They created a stage in Europe for collaboration across countries.

Sonia Roschnik, Executive Director - Geneva Sustainability Centre, Switzerland

This report commemorates HCWH Europe’s critical role in driving environmental action across European healthcare by reflecting on key milestones, moments, and publications from the past 20 years. We also celebrate current standout sustainability projects from across our networks.

The final section of the report features key perspectives from healthcare leaders across Europe on what sustainable healthcare will look like in the next 20 years.

We have the vision and a clear strategy to continue to push for bold, impactful action. As we look forward, our ambition is to embed a long-term aspiration for sustainability across the European healthcare sector and to accelerate action, building on our considerable collective progress so far.

Anders Bolmstedt, Chair of the Board of Directors - HCWH Europe
