We are seeking 12 speakers to each present a 10-12 minute TED talk-style presentations that will inform and inspire attendees to address the barriers that one may face in the PEM healthcare workforce.

We envision that your talk will illuminate an experience or discuss an idea to inform and address the inequities that challenge those in PEM. Examples of topics are listed below, but we encourage creativity and will not limit what is proposed!

The application and further instructions are also below. As part of the submission process, we are requiring applicants to upload a brief (2-3 minute) informal videotaped description of the general theme of your proposed talk.If appropriate, you may also submit an idea for a dual speaker presentation. Please assure both potential speakers are in the video submission. If you are selected, you will be notified approximately 6-8 months prior to the conference and will work with a speaking coach to help develop your talk.

Previous and Potential Speaker Topics

  1. Encouraging one to stand up and use your voice as a PEM physician to encourage change (dealing with violent patients and ensuring safe policies, running for office or institutional leadership).
  2. Empowering one to stand up to fight against issues that you or someone you care about face as a professional female physician. Be an ally, an advocate or an accomplice to change (support Times Up Healthcare/sexual harassment, communicating effectively & circumventing just “being an angry” woman).
  3. Discussing issues one faces as a female PEM physician to foster acceptance and demonstrate you’re not alone (miscarriage & fertility, dealing with mommy guilt, substance abuse, divorce).
  4. Inspiring ways to mitigate physician burnout as an EM physician (building your raft/support system to deal with difficult shifts and/the challenges of work-life balance, advocating for our underserved communities, mentoring those following in our footsteps).
  5. Educating each other in efforts to break down pre-existing stigmas among the PEM workforce (travel/locums docs, ageism, obesity, being childless).
  6. Highlighting ways that all physicians can address current inequalities in healthcare that need to be addressed to improve patient outcomes (educating colleagues & trainees about how systemic racism and gender bias impacts medical research/education, improving access to safe, quality health care/transportation or ensuring medical interpreters).
  7. Discussing gender inequity in leadership in PEM and potential solutions (breaking into the C suite as a female, how to be successful as a NIH funded researcher).
