HealthManagement Editorial Board member, Professor Henrik S. Thomsen, is a leading light in urogenital radiology. He hails from Denmark, where he is professor of radiology at the University of Copenhagen and a consultant radiologist at Copenhagen University Hospital at Herlev.
We put our seven questions to Prof. Thomsen:
1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
My key areas of interest and research are adverse events to contrast media and imaging of the kidney and urinary tract.
2. What are the major challenges in your field?
One of the most important challenges within the field of radiology is selecting the sick patients from the healthy patients. Furthermore, ensuring that the correct diagnosis is reached the first time and avoiding exposing the patient to too much radiation.
3. What is your top management tip?
My top management tip is TRUST. Always show trust in the employee. However, if the trust is broken you will need to act upon it.
4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
My career highlight is the establishment and viability of European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR), which celebrates its 25th birthday next year in 2015.
5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a...?
...nephrologist.
6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
Travelling is one of my major personal interests outside of work.
7. Your favourite quote?
"To travel is to live" by H.C. Andersen (Danish "At rejse er at leve").
Professor Thomsen has been at Herlev Hospital since 1996, and became Professor of Radiology at the University of Copenhagen in 1999. He was director of the Department of Diagnostic Science at the university from 2001 until 2013. Since 2013 he is responsible for the course in diagnostic science for medical students.
Prof. Thomsen was the prime mover behind the estalishment of the European Society of Uroradiology (now European Society of Urogenital Radiology - ESUR) in 1990. He was President of ESUR from 1998 to 2000 and has been a honorary member since 2002. Since 1996 he has chaired the ESUR Contrast Media Safety Committee, which issues guidelines on the safe use of contrast media.
His awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award, Society of Abdominal Radiology in 2010, the Torsten Almén Award from CMR in 2011 and the Athenian Award, European Society of Urogenital Radiology, 2009.
He has published over 500 papers, including educational and scientific articles, book chapters and review. He is an editor of "Basisbog i Diagnostiske Fag", a Danish language book which introduces diagnostic sciences to medical students. He is co-editor of Contrast media: Safety issues and ESUR guidelines, published by Springer, now in its third edition.
He is a member of the editorial boards of Abdominal Imaging, European Radiology, Academic Radiology, Acta Radiologica, and he has guest edited issues of Abdominal Imaging and European Radiology.
Prof. Thomsen was a committee member of the Management in Radiology section of the European Society of Radiology from 2003 until 2012, and is on the ESMRMB Safety Committee and the ISMRM Committee of NSF.
ESUR will welcome delegates to Copenhagen in September 2015 for the 25th birthday of the society, and the 22nd Annual Meeting of the society.
