Prof. Johan G. (Hans) Blickman is Vice Chair, Department of Imaging Sciences at the University of Rochester’s Medical Center and Radiologist-in-Chief at the Golisano Childrens Hospital. Prof. Blickman is a valued member of the HealthManagement Editorial Board and prior to that served on the Editorial Board of IMAGING Management. 

We put our 7 questions to Prof. Blickman.

1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
  • Paediatric imaging: trauma, gastrointestinal, genitourinary
  • Management of imaging departments

2. What are the major challenges in your field?
  • Decreasing reimbursements
  • Commoditisation of imaging
  • Part-time workforce

3. What is your top management tip?
Your people should come to work with a smile on their faces, and, if you do it right, leave with a smile on their faces at the end of the day.

4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
Nearing completion of designing/building and opening my third department of academic (paediatric) imaging at the Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester, New York, USA.

5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a…?
No idea!

6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
Running, yacht racing, classical music and reading historical tomes.

7. Your favourite quote?
“It is not how you get knocked down, but how you get up…”

Prof. Blickman studied medicine at Boston University in the USA and was awarded his PhD from Erasmus University in the Netherlands. He completed his fellowship in paediatric radiology at Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital Medical Center. 

His professional career since then has included being an administrator and paediatric radiologist: rising to Professor of Radiology & Pediatrics, Boston University School of Medicine (1985-89, 1996-2000) sandwiched around being an Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School while Division Chief of Pediatric Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital 1989-1995. He then returned to his native Netherlands as Professor & Chairman, Department of Radiology, UMC Nijmegen The Netherlands, 2000-2008. He returned to the USA in 2009 to take up his current position.  

Prof. Blickman is the author of eight books and monographs, more than 120 refereed journal articles,  and several book chapters. Since 2011 he has been Editor-in-Chief, European Journal of Radiology and Associate Editor, GoRad.
