Professor Daniel De Backer takes up the role of President of the
European Society of Intensive Care Medicine in October. Dr. De Backer is
a Professor in the Department of Intensive Care at Erasme University
Hospital in Brussels.
We put our 7 questions to Prof. De Backer:
1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
Circulatory failure, haemodynamic monitoring and therapies, microcirculation, organ support.
2. What are the major challenges in your field?
Transforming high quality research into patient centred outcomes.
3. What is your top management tip?
Do your best.
4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
My first NEJM paper as principal investigator of investigator-driven research.
5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a…?
I cannot imagine not choosing this career!
6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
Family, mountain biking, ski-ing, sailing.
7. Your favourite quote?
Challenge the evidence.

Brussels native, De Backer obtained his MD diploma with magna cum laude
in June 1986 from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He became fully
specialised in internal medicine in 1991 and in intensive care medicine
in 1992 (both at Université Libre de Bruxelles). In 1996, Dr. De Backer
obtained his PhD at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
Prof.
De Backer has published more than 200 articles, 30 editorials, more
than 30 book chapters and review articles and 250 original abstracts. He
has presented more than 700 invited lectures, and has frequently served
as moderator at various international meetings. serves as reviewer for
30 journals. He is currently associate editor of "Anesthesiology and
Critical Care", “Critical Care”, and the “International Journal of
Intensive Care”, and he serves on the advisory board of several other
journals. He is former associate editor of "Intensive Care Medicine". In
addition, he is course director of several courses on echocardiography
in Brussels, Sao Paulo and at the American Thoracic Society annual
meeting.
Prof. De Backer is past Vice-President of the Société
de Réanimation de Langue Française, past Chairman of the Research
Committee of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and former
head of the “ESICM Trial Group”.
