A new joint venture, first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has been announced between Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), the largest healthcare network in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Mayo Clinic, a not-for-profit global organisation in medical care, education and research. The new enterprise will be the operator of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, one of the UAE’s largest hospital facilities treating serious or complex medical conditions.

The two partners’ teams are preparing to jointly open Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, a 741-licensed bed hospital, which will provide specialty care in various clinical practices.

The agreement was signed by H.E. Salem Rashid Al Noaimi, Chairman of SEHA and Gianrico Farrugia, MD, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. Acting as an international health care provider in the UAE, Mayo Clinic will become a shareholder in the new company.

His Excellency Abdulla Bin Mohamed Al Hamed, Chairman of the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, noted that the Emirate of Abu Dhabi “strives to provide UAE nationals and residents with renowned healthcare services that match international benchmarks”. He praised the partnership between SEHA and Mayo Clinic as a major development for Abu Dhabi's and the UAE's health care system.

Farrugia pointed out that this collaboration was unique in the region, “with Mayo Clinic physicians, nurses, administrators and others working side by side with colleagues from SEHA.” “We look forward to transforming Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City into the premier destination for medical care in the region,” he said.

Prior to the announcement, Mayo Clinic and SEHA teams developed a plan, which would see the launch of 24 specialty clinics. Having opened earlier in November, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, the flagship in SEHA's health care portfolio, is expected to be in full operation, including all inpatient departments, in early 2020.

The facility, which covers 300,000 square meters, will be staffed by 2,240 caregivers, including more than 440 internationally trained physicians. In the UAE, it is distinguished by its specialised services and advanced diagnostics, as well as the specialised procedures offered, and will use the latest health care technologies, including robotic surgery.
