Microsoft Corp. and Epic recently announced they will continue to work together to develop and integrate generative AI into healthcare by combining the scale and power of Azure OpenAI Service1 with Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) software.

They intend on providing a broad range of AI-powered solutions integrated with Epic’s EHR, to increase productivity, improve patient care and the financial integrity of health systems globally. Additionally, integrating generative AI into the workflow will free up time for providers, allowing them to focus on the clinical duties that require their attention.

UC San Diego Health, UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin, and Stanford Health Care are among the first organisations starting to deploy enhancements to automatically draft message responses.

Another solution will bring natural language queries and interactive data analysis to Epic’s self-service reporting tool, SlicerDicer, to support clinical leaders explore data more intuitively.

Approximately half of U.S. hospitals ended 2022 with a negative margin as growth in expenses outpaced revenue increases.  Experts and industry participants are aware that long-term financial stability can be achieved via increased productivity and technological efficiency.

Eric Boyd, corporate vice president, AI Platform, Microsoft, commented, “The urgent and critical challenges facing healthcare systems and their providers demand a comprehensive approach combining Azure OpenAI Service with Epic’s industry-leading technology”.

“Our expanded partnership builds on a long history of collaboration between Microsoft, Nuance and Epic, including our work to help healthcare organizations migrate their Epic environments to Azure. Together we can help providers deliver significant clinical and business outcomes leveraging the power of the Microsoft Cloud and Epic”.

Microsoft is putting their set of principles: fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability, into practice to develop and deploy AI that will have a positive impact on society.
