Epic, holding the largest U.S. hospital market share among EHR vendors, is reportedly joining forces with Apple to develop a version of its EHR that would be easier to run on Apple devices.
Apple works with healthcare organisations and with supported EHR vendors so that patients who use the Health app on their Apple device can have easy access to their health records. Additionally, iOS 15 allowed users to share select Health app data with their doctor or other providers. Users have the option to choose the data they want sharing and authenticate It using patient portal credentials.
Past disagreements between Epic and Apple prevented them from collaborating sooner. Whilst Apple pushes for easing health record sharing requirements, Epic believes that compliance with interoperability rules would be burdensome and endanger patient safety. However, despite these disagreements they seem to have found common ground.
It may not be an immediate launch, but the deal will see Epic and Apple collaborate to eventually improve patient access to EHR data on Apple devices.
