The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is broadcasting a special lecture series on COVID-19 online to both the medical profession and the general public.

 

The ‘Late-breaking "Trending Topic" session’ will be available online and will focus on the “experience and challenges in imaging and beyond”.

Called ‘Novel coronavirus outbreak: experience and challenges in imaging and beyond’,the one-hour programme will comprise ten speakers and seven lectures. It will cover imaging specificities in patients infected with COVID-19, understanding the challenges for public health and healthcare professionals related to the recent outbreak and revision of past and current experience with treating and following-up on acute viral pulmonary infections.

 

It will also include an overview of the current situation for Chinese radiologists in a pre-recorded statement from the president of the Chinese Society of Radiologists.

 

On the occasion of current developments and the great relevance for public health, ESR has decided at short notice to hold a special lecture series on COVID-19 at the upcoming European Congress of Radiology (ECR),” ESR said in a statement. “For the first time at a congress of this magnitude, experts from various disciplines are to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of the novel disease.”

 

ESR went on to say it wanted to put itself and its scientific network at the service of educating and combating coronavirus, particularly as radiology played a central role in the early detection and diagnosis of the disease.

 

Experts from Wuhan and Shanghai (both via remote video presentation), Paris, Frankfurt, Munich and Rome will present their experience in the imaging and treatment of patients infected with COVID-19.  Stressing the need for interdisciplinary cooperation to combat the disease, the panel will include radiologists, pulmonologists, epidemiologists and virologists. Prim. Univ. Prof. Dr. Otto C. Burghuber, one of Austria’s leading pulmonologists, will lead the panel.

 

Meanwhile, the ESR has released a second statement reiterating ECR’s readiness for the March congress in the face of the spread of COVID-19.


‘Novel coronavirus outbreak: experience and challenges in imaging and beyond’ will take place on March 12 from 17:45 to 18:45. Online registration has for the free livestream has opened and is free to all.


COVID-19 broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan at the end of December last year and was declared a global emergency by WHO one month later. According to WHO data at the time of publication, 45 countries are affected by the virus. There have been 82,104 COVID-19 cases and 2,800 deaths.
