This week AI industry leaders, including high-level executives at Microsoft and Google, academics and even several celebrities issued a new warning regarding the dangers and impacts that AI could potentially pose.

The statement said “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war”.

Among the hundreds of leading officials who signed the statement was OpenAI CEO Sam Altaman, and Geoffrey Hinton, also known as the ‘Godfather’ of AI.

The statement released an urgent warning regarding the wide-ranging concerns about some of the most severe risks that could follow if artificial intelligence is left unchecked.

The statement follows the rapid success of ChatGPT. Today’s chatbots largely reproduce patterns based on the data they’ve been provided without having to think for themselves.  However, they have proven to be highly capable and this signifies concern and fear about the ultimate danger of unchecked AI.

Additionally, many lawmakers, advocacy groups and tech insiders have raised concerns about the alarming possibility for AI-powered chatbots to spread misinformation and displace jobs.

The excitement and investment into the AI industry has left countries rushing to finalise regulations; the European Union has been leading the way with its AI Act expected to be approved towards the end of the year.

According to the BBC news, Dan Hendrycks, Director of the Center for AI Safety, said that the statement “does not preclude society from addressing other types of AI risk, such as algorithmic bias or misinformation”.

The statement aims to open up discussion and create common knowledge of the growing number of experts and public figures who are taking into account some of AI’s most severe risks.
