The European
Society of Radiology (ESR), the largest
radiological society in the world with more than 63,000 members, will launch a
new scientific publication next year that will provide a forum for basic
scientific discoveries, novel approaches and techniques in experimental
settings.
The new journal, European Radiology Experimental, will be an open access, online-only edition and the ESR has already appointed Prof. Francesco Sardanelli from Milan, Italy, as its first Editor-in-Chief.
This publication will complement the ESR’s flagship journal, European Radiology, where clinically relevant research is published, and its scope will include new research fields such as radiomics and radiogenomics, and new techniques.
Sardanelli is a long-time and active member of the ESR and served as president of the European Society of Breast Imaging (EUSOBI) from 2012 to 2015. He is currently EUSOBI’s delegate to the ESR Research Committee. Sardanelli is professor of radiology and director of the Postgraduation Course in Radiodiagnostics at Milan University, and director of the department of radiology at the Research Hospital (IRCCS) Policlinico San Donato in Milan.
Additionally, he is director of the European Network for the Assessment of Imaging in Medicine (EuroAIM) of the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Research (EIBIR). He has co-authored more than 300 full articles, six books and 46 book chapters on a large spectrum of topics including breast, cardiovascular, neuro, body, musculoskeletal radiology as well as methodological issues.
In his first statement as Editor-in-Chief, Sardanelli said that the decision to initiate this new journal comes at a time when two major needs for radiology are emerging all over the world: first, to have a specific journal fostering the connection between radiology (imaging, in a broader view) and the experimental setting; second, to answer the increasing demand for open access publishing of radiological research.
Submissions to European Radiology Experimental will open in autumn 2016 and the first publications are expected for ECR 2017.
"This will be open to innovation in radiology including technical issues and new methodological approaches to clinical study design. Abraham Lincoln said, ‘The best way to predict your future is to create it.’ Of course, journals alone cannot do this, but the ESR is already driving relevant processes, working for the next generation of radiologists. In this context, (the new journal) can be a pivotal force and I am happy to contribute to this effort,” Sardanelli said.
